A 17-month-old baby was among the two latest serious cases announced by health authorities as officials denied the relationship between the severe symptoms and Sinovac jab after reporting 8,457 new Covid infections on Saturday.
Among the new cases, 8,225 were locally transmitted, including 1,816 confirmed via PCR tests and 6,409 verified RAT test results.
The Centre for Health Protection also logged 232 imported cases – 108 identified at the airport, 47 in quarantine hotels, 58 in community testing centers, and 19 after returnees completed the seven-day isolation.
Four new deaths – two men and two women aged 69 to 91 – also pushed the death tally of the fifth wave to 9,441. Two of them were doubly jabbed and had to receive the booster jab.
Hospital Authority announced two latest serious cases that involved toddlers, including a 17-month-old baby boy. The baby was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital on Friday night with a fever and twitching in his limbs. He was suspected of having stopped breathing once as well.
The baby was then transferred to the children's intensive care unit of Princess Margaret Hospital. His PCR test result returned positive, and he developed croup.
The hospital later learned that the baby got his first Sinovac jab on Friday, and experts from HA believed he developed the symptoms because of
Covid, and it had nothing to do with the
vaccine shot after assessment.
The hospital said they will closely monitor the baby's condition and his
Covid test result remains negative so far.
Another serious case involved a 10-year-old boy. He suffered from a high-degree fever since August 22 and tested positive the same day. He had difficulty breathing and sought help at Caritas Medical Centre on August 25.
He was also sent to the children's intensive care unit of Princess Margaret Hospital and remained in serious condition.
Four elderly homes and a care center for the disabled reported new infections, while two more schools were ordered to suspend classes for a week.
As of Saturday, there are a total of 2,387
Covid patients. Among them, 39 are in critical condition, 33 are in serious condition, and 12 are in hospital intensive care. Another 291 patients have recovered from
Covid, and 252 patients have been discharged.
