Autonomous shuttle bus begins service at HK airport
Hong Kong’s Airport Authority said on Friday that an autonomous shuttle bus will start carrying airport staff to work in various locations across the airport’s restricted area beginning this coming Monday.
The autonomous shuttle bus will run 12 hours a day on a fixed route, with a maximum passenger capacity of 14 people. The bus can travel up to 200 kilometers on a 1.5-hour full charge. It will also be equipped with radar, GPS, video analytic cameras, and a monitoring system.
The Authority said the autonomous bus had completed 1,000 test runs, adding that its performance is even more stable than manually operated buses.
A “bus operator” will be posted to the autonomous bus during the initial stage to ensure passengers’ safety, with the Authority hoping that the arrangement can be canceled after four to six months.
The Authority also noted that they planned to introduce five to ten more autonomous shuttle buses to the fleet in the short term.
In the long run, the Authority is planning to apply autonomous driving systems to Airport City Link, carrying passengers to and from the airport, SKYCITY, and Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities in 2024.
The system will also be extended to Tung Chung Town Centre in 2028, further enhancing transportation to and from the airport.
