The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) today announced the establishment of the “Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) Alliance” (SMTA), to enhance the Smart Mobility ecosystem in Hong Kong, fostering more collaboration amongst industry, academia and research on Smart Mobility and related technologies, and facilitating Hong Kong in the deployment of C-V2X technology and infrastructure, that will help Hong Kong to become an exemplar of Smart City. Mr. Lam Sai-hung, Secretary for Transport and Logistics, as well as experts and industry leaders from academic and Smart Mobility sectors, got together to witness the establishment of SMTA. “Digital Economy Summit – Smart Mobility Forum” was also held to share about initial achievements made in technology and its future development, and discuss challenges of C-V2X applications in Hong Kong and its solutions, and issues such as commercialization in autonomous driving.
Mr. Lam Sai-hung, Secretary for Transport and Logistics, said, “The Government is committed to bringing technology into every aspect of the citizens’ lives and actively promoting the development of ‘smart city’. One of the major initiatives of ‘smart mobility’ is to promote a wider trial and application of autonomous vehicles and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies in Hong Kong. ASTRI has taken the lead in establishing the SMTA, which provides a cross-industry platform to connect different sectors and facilitate the development of the V2X technology ecosystem in Hong Kong, in order to create a favourable environment conducive to knowledge transfer and commercialisation, and to jointly promote the use of V2X in Hong Kong.”
Mr. Stephen Ho, Board Member of ASTRI, was delighted to see the establishment of the Alliance and said, “C-V2X technology is the prominent step to smart city development. As 5G network technology is getting mature, more and more innovative application technologies will be introduced. C-V2X technology of ASTRI is one of them. Experts from various sectors congregate under the “Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) Alliance”, jointly explore how to leverage local innovation and technology in enhancing road safety and efficiency, laying an important foundation for future development of C-V2X technology, connected autonomous vehicles and Smart City, in order to bring a more convenient livelihood for citizens and create a business-friendly environment.”
Dr. Denis Yip, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, looked forward to the multi-faceted positive energy that would bring to Smart Mobility in Hong Kong after the establishment of the Alliance and said, “Promoting Smart Mobility is one of the keys to a city’s sustainable development. ASTRI partnered with experts, professors and industry leaders from different sectors to form the “Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) Alliance”, jointly enhancing the ecosystem of transport technology and the related infrastructure, developing diversified technological research, exploring application scenarios and feasible solutions, and driving more collaboration amongst industry, academia and research on innovation and technology. Cities in the Greater Bay Area can refer to Hong Kong’s experience, facilitating mutual access of transportation between Hong Kong and Mainland, making Hong Kong an international I&T Centre under the State’s 14th Five-Year Plan.
Establish “Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) Alliance” to expedite the deployment of C-V2X technology and infrastructure
Smart city technology is an important drive for economic recovery and societal resumption. The Government has published the “Smart Mobility Roadmap for Hong Kong” and the “Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong 2.0” respectively for the implementation of “Smart Mobility”. With consideration of commuting convenience and safety for citizens, the Government actively pursue the integration of technologies into city management and services, and creation of a business-friendly environment that improves the ease of doing business, bringing citizens benefits in their daily lives. To expedite the deployment of Smart Mobility and related applications in Hong Kong, ASTRI takes the lead in establishing the “Smart Mobility Technology (C-V2X) Alliance” which has gained support from numerous local academia and leading organisations from the industry, aiming to facilitate the R&D on key technologies such as C-V2X, 5G and Autonomous Driving, maintaining close ties among stakeholders, promoting cooperation amongst the industries, research institutes and academia, and exploring possible solutions for common challenges and technological needs in the industry, so as to promote the development of an innovative, collaborative, entrepreneurial and technologically commercialised ecosystem together.
First-hand experience of the leading technology from ASTRI – C-V2X Technology
ASTRI strives to develop various smart technologies, steering Hong Kong into an international smart city. C-V2X technology is one of the Hero technologies of ASTRI. The R&D of C-V2X technology was commenced with the support of the Innovation and Technology Commission and Transport Department in 2015, complementing with the high-speed, reliable and low-latency 5G network technology, resulting in a more effective, accurate and faster information sharing, improving road and pedestrian safety and traffic efficiency. In 2021, ASTRI launched one of the world’s largest and the first in Hong Kong C-V2X public road tests, covering a 14km route from Hong Kong Science Park to Sha Tin town centre. Last year, the second phase of road tests and the “Shenzhen-Hong Kong C-V2X I&T Corridor” were launched, to study and test the technology’s application scenarios on the roads of Hong Kong, as well as the network and infrastructure required, which further promote connectivity of transportation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and autonomous driving across the Greater Bay Area.
Besides sharing the latest development of C-V2X technology and use cases at the “Digital Economy Summit – Smart Mobility Forum”, ASTRI will also showcase C-V2X technology at InnoEX which will be held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 12 -15 April. Participants could learn more about future applications of Smart Mobility first-hand. During the exhibition, ASTRI will also showcase other Hero technologies, including Easy 5G Solution, federated learning, natural language processing, privacy-preserving sensing technology, HoneyNet-Early Cyber Threat Hunting & Analysis Network, 3rd generation semiconductor, and an energy-saving innovative 3D Integrated Circuit Platform technology.
