Arcturus variant cases in Hong Kong ‘tip of the iceberg,’ says health expert
Respiratory medicine specialist Leung Chi-chiu said on Tuesday that there was a surge in new and recombinant Covid-19 variants around the globe in the past six months and that the Arcturus variant cases found in Hong Kong are only the “tip of the iceberg.”
Speaking on a radio program this morning, Leung said different variants have been contending to become the dominant strain around the world at different times, which also implies that an Antigenic shift has been observed with the virus.
However, he said there was yet one particular variant to become the dominant strain affecting the whole world.
The health expert said the current Arcturus outbreak in India is only a rebound and is far less severe than the Omicron outbreak.
He expected Hong Kong to eventually experience similar situations, which is also similar to influenza.
“It is normal, and citizens should not worry about it,” he added.
