Architect swindled out of HK$24.5m in Tether investment scam
A 44-year-old architect was swindled out of over HK$24.5 million after she was lured into a Tether (USDT) investment scam by a so-called Taiwanese architect, who also happened to be an “investment expert.”
The woman met the fraudster on messaging app WhatsApp last June, who claimed he was also an architect from Taiwan and was an investment expert at the same time.
The fraudster successfully lured the woman to trade Tether on a fraudulent website and the woman wired over HK$24.5 million to a bank account as instructed in a total of 65 transactions between last June and this January.
As the woman wanted to reap her investment rewards, she was asked by the fraudster to pay administration fees. She refused to further pay money but found the fraudster disappeared for good and the fraudulent website had stopping operating.
She finally realized she was cheated and filed a report to Tai Po Police Station on Tuesday.
The case was listed as obtaining property through deception and police investigation is ongoing. So far, no one has been arrested.
