Appeal dismissed for protesters convicted breaching group gathering restriction
Seven people convicted of violating restrictions on gatherings in public over participating in a protest in 2020, filed an application for a certificate to appeal to the Court of Final Appeal but got dismissed on Thursday.
The defendants, including former legislators Leung Kwok-hung and Lee Cheuk-yan, held a demonstration outside the Government Headquarters in Admiralty on May 1, 2020, requesting unemployment assistance subsidy.
Eight people were arrested and charged with breaching the restriction of group gatherings. They were convicted last year and face a 14-day imprisonment but 18 months of a suspended sentence.
The eight defendants appealed to the High Court against their sentence but were rejected in October. Seven of them sought another appeal and were dismissed again today under the judgment of Judge Albert Wong Sung-hau.
