Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen will remain Legislative Council president, after he was automatically elected to the position on Tuesday.
Leung from Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong was nominated by lawmaker Martin Liao Chung-kong from the commercial constituency. He was the only candidate nominated.
Thirteen lawmakers including Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee from New People's Party, Priscilla Leung Mei-fun also from the alliance and Starry Lee Wai-king from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong voted to support the nomination.
Yesterday, the 90 lawmakers were sworn in after taking an oath to pledge allegiance to the SAR government and the Basic Law before Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.
The Legco Commission also decided to hang both the national emblem and the SAR emblem in the chamber in this LegCo term. In the past, only the SAR emblem can be found.
Speaking to media Tuesday afternoon, Leung said the law requires the national emblem to be displayed when lawmakers take their oath. After that, the commission decided to keep the emblem.
But there is a size issue for the emblems. According to the law, the SAR emblem must be smaller than the national one when they are displayed next to each other.
“The national emblem we have is of the same size with the SAR emblem. We have ordered a smaller SAR emblem but it has yet to arrive.”
He said he has to seek advice whether the national emblem can remain at the conference before the smaller SAR emblem arrives.
“I feel more confident as (LegCo) president, with the national emblem having my back,” Leung said.
