AMTD CEO Calvin Choi disqualified by vetting committee
Entrepreneur Calvin Choi Chi-kin has been disqualified from an election which chooses the members of the all-powerful Election Committee.
Choi is one of the two people who were disqualified by a vetting committee established after Hong Kong's electoral changes this year.
Choi, who is the chief executive of AMTD Group, filed his nomination to join the election committee election through the insurance sub-sector on August 12.
According to Chief Secretary John Lee Ka-chiu, Choi's nomination was banned as he doesn't fulfill the requirement of becoming a registered district voter.
He did not name Choi by name at a press conference this afternoon, but Choi was found to have been disqualified on a document on the Election Committee website, which shows his status as “invalidly nominated.” It also said there are a total of 17 seats in the insurance subsector, which will be filled on October 22.
Lawmaker Cheng Chung-tai was also disqualified as an eligible candidate for the election committee elections. He also lost his seat in the Legislative Council with immediate effect.
