Amended election bill to be submitted to the LegCo within this month, says Matthew Cheung
Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung Kin-chung hoped that the electoral law amendments could be up for deliberation at the Legislative Council in mid-April.
He said the authorities are working hard to finish the amendment, which included over 20 principal ordinances and subsidiary legislation.
Cheung said his goal was to have the amendment bill to be approved in the third reading by the end of next month. This would allow the authorities to carry out the elections on schedule, including a LegCo election in December and the Chief Executive election in March 2022.
Last month, the National People's Congress adopted a decision on improving the electoral system of Hong Kong and completed the amendment of annex I and annex II to the Basic Law of the SAR.
