Alvin Cheng of disbanded Civic Passion jailed 44 months for rioting
Alvin Cheng Kam-mun, a former member of disbanded Civic Passion who helped protesters escape Polytechnic University through the sewers during the social unrest four years ago, was on Saturday jailed for three years and eight months for rioting.
Thirty-four-year-old Cheng, who used to be the assistant to former lawmaker Cheng Chung-tai, was among eight people arrested by police and charged with perverting the course of justice. Yet, the charge against Cheng was changed to rioting and he was later found guilty.
The seven co-defendants were driver Ip Ka-ki, 29; renovation company boss Ho Chi-ho, 30; Home Affairs Department officer Chan Kai-yin, 35; barista Wong Yat-to, 26; stage worker Fung Sze-yui, 31; advertisement director Lam Wing-man, 33; and salesman Leung Cho-kwong, 26.
Ip, Wong and Leung had pleaded guilty earlier while Ho, Chan, Fung and Lam were convicted after a trial.
In District Court on Saturday, deputy judge Cheng Lim-chi put Alvin Cheng behind bars for three years and eight months for rioting.
The remaining defendants all saw their jail terms deducted by one to two months.
Ip, Wong and Leung were jailed for seven, 10 and nine months, respectively.
Chan, Fung and Lam were sentenced to one-year imprisonment, and Ho was jailed for 13 months.
The charge of perverting the course of justice alleged all eight of them of helping protesters escape police arrests and flee PolyU on November 20, 2019, while the rioting charge alleged Cheng of taking part in the PolyU siege on November 17 the same year.
