Alef Aeronautics Achieves Historic Milestone with Flight Certification for World's First Flying Car
The California-based company’s all-electric flying car, boasting a range of 177 kilometers, is set to take to the skies after receiving certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration
Alef Aeronautics, a pioneering company in the realm of aerial mobility, has achieved a landmark feat with its groundbreaking flying car receiving legal clearance to fly from the United States Government. The San Mateo-based company announced that it has been bestowed with a Special Airworthiness Certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), making it the first-ever flying car to receive such certification in the United States.
The certificate, however, comes with certain stipulations. “The FAA is actively working on its policies for electrical vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, as well as governing interactions between eVTOLs and ground infrastructure,” Alef Aeronautics said in a statement. The company further clarified, “Alef's Special Airworthiness Certificate, therefore, limits the locations and purpose for which Alef is permitted to fly.”
Revolutionizing the commuting experience, Alef Aeronautics’ flying car is entirely electric and has the capacity to accommodate one or two passengers. With its ability to soar above traffic congestion and road accidents, the vehicle comes with a price tag of approximately $300,000, as reported by Fox News.
Alef Aeronautics pulled back the curtain on a full-sized sports car prototype and two operational full-sized technology demonstrator cars in October 2022. The company experienced a surge in demand, with over 440 pre-orders recorded as of January from both individual enthusiasts and corporate consumers.
The company aims to start delivering flying cars to eagerly awaiting customers by the conclusion of 2025. “Alef is aiming to deliver the first real flying car in history, and to receive so many early pre-orders is an incredible validation of the market potential we're looking to satisfy,” said Jim Dukhovny, CEO of Alef Aeronautics, in an earlier statement.
Alef's flying car is designed to seamlessly transition from the skies to conventional roadways. According to the company's website, the vehicle can be driven on regular urban or rural roads and easily parked in standard parking spaces or garages. However, it is important to note that on paved surfaces, the car is classified as a low-speed vehicle with a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour. Alef’s website mentions, “The assumption is that if a driver needs a faster route, a driver will use Alef's flight capabilities.”
With a range of 177 kilometers (approximately 110 miles), the flying car represents a monumental leap in transportation technology. Alef Aeronautics’ achievement not only brings the long-dreamed concept of flying cars closer to reality but also signals the beginning of a new era in transportation, potentially transforming the way society commutes.
