Actress Liza Wang has difficulty selecting 40 lawmakers
TVB actress Liza Wang Ming-chun said she has difficulty in selecting 40 candidates in the Legislative Council election.
Wang is one of the 1,448 Election Committee members who has the power to elect 40 lawmakers among a total of 90. Another 30 people are elected in functional constituencies representing different sectors, while the remaining 20 are elected in geographical constituencies by general voters.
The turnout for Election Committee members was 82.2 percent as of 2.30pm.
Wang, who is from the sports, performing arts, culture and publication sector of Election Committee, said she found it hard to pick the candidates as she did not know many of them well enough.
She said the voters have to see their ballots checked by a machine to make sure they have filled all 40 choices – not more and not fewer. Some members have to fill in a new ballot after making mistakes, she said.
Another committee member and former Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang Ying-yen said he spent 20 minutes ticking off the 40 candidates he supported, as the ballot paper only listed the candidates' names but not their photos.
As for functional constituencies, a big contrast was seen in the turnout for different sectors. As of 2.30pm Sunday, the highest turnout 93.4 percent was seen in commercial (third), which is a sector for mainland enterprises, and the lowest 8.5 percent was for the social welfare sector which is traditionally dominated by pro-democratic politicians.
For sectors previously dominated by the non-establishment camp, the turnout was lower, at a range of between 12.4 to 13.7 percent for sectors including education, legal, accounting as well as medical and health services.
