A night with firefighters as hiker hospitalized some 20 hours after reporting injury
A 67-year-old hiker in Ma On Shan was sent to the hospital about 20 hours following his foot injury as firefighters spent the night keeping him company before rescuers safely moved him to the ground and boarded him in an ambulance on Wednesday afternoon.
The man was hiking at Ngau Ngak Shan, also known as The Hunch Backs when he fell and suffered a sprain at around 4.52 pm Tuesday. He filed a police report on his own, and firefighters finally located him near a stream by Ma On Shan Park around 7 pm.
Firefighters also contacted the Government Flying Service, but they couldn’t move the man to safer ground at once because of the weather and poor visibility at the time.
Firefighters then stayed there overnight to keep the man company.
Around 8 am today (Wed), firefighters and rescuers decided to move the man to the foot of the mountain themselves. The Amber Rainstorm Signal was issued during the rescue, and rescuers had to face fierce rainstorms and howling winds when moving the man.
At around 12.30 pm, the man was finally flown to the marine police headquarters in Ma Liu Shui and then sent to Prince of Wales Hospital in a conscious state.
